Most books have a colored cover and white pages. But The Fault in Our Stars is not like most books. It is not your typical novel about teenagers with cancer. It is blunt and realistic, and doesn’t turn cancer into a fairytale. The goal of this redesign was to be able to capture the attitude of this novel in a very minimal, handcrafted manner. The redesign combines my love for book arts and hand lettering with my traditional typography background. Funky hand lettering is combined with the historic Garamond typeface to capture Hazel’s brashness while maintaining readability. All I’ve got to say is eBooks got nothing on the experience of reading a hand-stitched novel.
